Every Viennese ball keeps a dance order. Ours begins in church and ends with carriages in the snow.

At the Augustinerkirche, where the emperors of Austria were married.

Empfang
A short walk across Josefsplatz to the Palais. Coats are taken at the door.

Four courses by candlelight. The speeches are short — we promise.

A polonaise, our first waltz, and then the call every guest waits for:

Mitternachtsquadrille
Called out step by step by the dance master. Nobody needs to know it beforehand.

Gulasch
The ball-night tradition, for anyone still on their feet.

Fiaker
Horse-drawn fiakers wait on Josefsplatz to take you back to your hotel.
Garderobe
Gentlemen
White tie
A tailcoat with a white waistcoat and white bow tie. A dinner jacket is welcome too.
Ladies
A floor-length gown
In any colour but white — on a Viennese ball floor, white belongs to the bride.
Everyone
Shoes to waltz in, and a warm coat
Vienna in January is about 0 °C. The cloakroom keeps your coat until the carriages at 2:00 am.
Nach dem Ball
Come a day early. Everything here is within a seven-minute walk of Josefsplatz.

An hour with the dance masters of Tanzschule Elmayer, Bräunerstraße 13. Beginners most welcome.

The City Airport Train reaches Wien Mitte in 16 minutes; a taxi to the first district takes about 25.
