Lotte’s thirty-fifth, on every floor of the house

One long November night in our narrow old house on the canal: supper in the kitchen, the piano in the salon, dancing on the second floor, and the cake up here, under the beams.

The whole house is open. Roughly, it goes like this.

8:00 pmSupper in the kitchenNoor is cooking, and the table stays laid all night.
9:30 pmPiano in the salonIlse de Wit plays Lotte’s favourites, from Satie to Stevie Wonder.
11:00 pmCake in the atticThirty-five candles, and the hoist doors wide open.
11:30 pmYour songs on the second floorRugs rolled back. The playlist is the songs you send us from the bell.
1:00 amCoats from the hallWe call the taxis and hand out apple tart for the road.

Getting inRing the top bell, Verhoeven. One of us will come down; the door sticks.
Coats & stairsHooks in the hall. Amsterdam stairs are steep: hold the rope, and flat shoes are wise.
What to bringOnly yourself and one song. If your hands insist: flowers, never presents.
Getting hereTram 13 or 17 to Westermarkt, then four minutes along the Bloemgracht.
Bikes & carsBikes in the racks on the bridge. There is no parking on the canal; a taxi can stop at the door.
